From Here to Health

My journey back from autoimmune disease

21 Day Sugar Detox- Day 7

One week under my belt.  And it hasn’t been torture.  Who knew?  I went to CrossFit today even though I had a massive, hormonally induced headache overnight.  As soon as I got to CrossFit and got moving the headache actually went away.  But then, I sort of killed it during the WOD (I beat everybody which hasn’t happened in months) and my headache came back!  The WOD was 21 KB swings and 400 m run- 12 minute AMRAP.  I think what got me was the running in the super cold temps.  I came home and strapped on a cold pack and laid down and it was gone in about 20 minutes.  The rest of the day was pretty low key.  I had this notion that I needed to rest so after Finn and I got haircuts and lunch, I pretty much just chilled at home with one had attached to my kindle.  I did not know what I was missing before I got my KindleFire HD for Christmas.  I thought I wouldn’t like it because I am kinda old school and like the feel and smell of an actual book.  However, I am also a neat freak and have 5 people living in a modest house.  A house where we homeschool, no less, so the books are pretty much coming out of our ears around here.  My kindle allows me to have my Bible, a fiction novel, my latest paleo or health related book, and usually some other nonfiction all going at one time without giant piles of books everywhere.  I also never liked to read on the computer, but this feels different for some reason.  While my boys and I watched Netflix and read books, my hubs and and Finn went to the Daddy Daughter Round Up at church.  I’m pretty sure she gets more dates with my husband than I do!

Catching Up

Ok, so I know I have been remiss about posting over the past week.  I expect all of you to forgive me:))  Just as everyone else on the planet, I have been crazy busy.  I am also trying to decide where I want to take this blog.  I feel like I may have outgrown the current format.  I still want to document where I am going, especially with my health and fitness journey, but it make take me a while to find a new groove, so hang with me, will ya?

My sleeping habits have been all over the map since my last post.  A couple of nights of no sleep, a few nights of deep dreamless sleep, a night of truly erotic dreams (gasp!) and then one dream where Jesus came to me.  I know, weird. FYI, Jesus didn’t speak to me this time, He just comforted me when I lost my daughter in the dream.  Still, it was the first time I had seen Jesus (asleep or awake) and it was pretty cool.  Not sure if the image was based on reality or  my own personal idea of Jesus’ appearance, but either way it was magical.

I have been working out consistently since my last post.  CrossFit, running, Zumba and Bodyrock.  I am improving upon my run time, slowly but surely.  My last 3 mile run was 29:24.  CrossFit has started this new Levels testing.  We had the tests for achieving Level 1 today and I made it!  Yeah me!  I don’t have my sheet in front of me but I think I can remember most of it.

1. 500 unbroken jump ropes

2. 20 unbroken box jumps (20 inches)

3. 15 unbroken thrusters (55 pounds)

4. 80 air squats in 2 minutes

5. 60 sit ups in 2 minutes

6. 20 burpees in 1 minute

7. 400 meter run 1:55 (finished mine in 1:35)

8. 15 unbroken push press ( 55 pounds)

I failed with the wall balls, which was 15 unbroken wall balls with a 14 pound ball.  I only got 7.  Since we only had to pass 8 item I was still good.  I also did 3 consecutive pull ups without a band so that was big stuff for me.

I went to a new accupucturist last week.  It was interesting and I loved my time spent on the table.  I find those needles totally relaxing.  Very zen.  However, after my first treatment my hair started falling out in clumps.  Small clumps, but clumps none the less.  Very strange.  I don’t think I am going back right away.  Also, I am out of money.

Other health news, I have spoken on here before about the state of my thyroid.  The last time it was tested, it was at 5.9.  Much too high, and in need of medication according to my doctor.  Of course, I refused medication and told her I wanted to work on it on my own first.  She is gracious and lovely and knows that I never do anything she says, so she said fine.  Come back in 3 months and let’s at least make sure it isn’t getting worse.  I went back last Friday and got the test.  My results came in today and my numbers was 2.274, a huge success.  The normal range is 0.35-5.50.  I still think it needs to come down a little more, but this is huge progress.  It does however leave me wondering why I haven’t dropped some of this weight and why my hair is still falling out???  Maybe with a little more time that will improve.  I’ll keep you posted.
The food around here has been good, but pretty standard for us.  I did make a new chicken nugget recipe called Fool’s Gold from Eat Like a Dinosaur tonight and the kids loved it.  Finally.  Most of my recipes lately have left my boys going to bed hungry.

Daily Log

Sleep- Another night of falling asleep drooling on my husband’s chest.  Sexy, right?  I know that is what all guys are looking for:))  So maybe not sexy, but a peaceful and safe way to fall asleep in my opinion.  Again, slept until almost 8:00.  Pretty awesome!

Exercise- No 9am CrossFit because of Labor Day.   Doug and I went for a 5k run instead.  Clocked in at 33 minutes exactly.  My goal is to be able to do it in 30 minutes, but I’m not in a big hurry to get there.  Today I just wanted to enjoy the run with my husband.  Around 5:00pm we did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout that was pretty tough.

2 egg omelet with spinach, red peppers, cheese and sausage; organic strawberries

Very weird picture, but it really is and omelet.  Some of the sausage was just piled on top.  Doug made these for us after our run.

Organic apple with sunflowerseed butter

Breakfast was really filling and kinda late so I wasn’t super hungry at lunch.

Mini DQ Reese’s Blizzard- 1/2 Empty

So I promised my daughter ice cream if she did well getting her picture made today.  Parker aka “Booger Mustache” is also a professional photographer so he came back today to get some shots of Finn.  She insists that she wants to be on TV so she has an audition with a casting agency on Saturday.  We have to bring some non-returnable photos to give them so Parker is helping us out.  Back to the snack, all the kids and Parker had a dip cone, but I got a mini Reese’s blizzard and just had half.  As soon as the really good bites were gone, I chunked it.

Thai Hot Plate from Well Fed

Once again I thought this was delish, but the kids wouldn’t touch it this go around.  My boys have gotten crazy picky over the last week.  One of my sons ate nothing today except the dip cone.  He now claims he doesn’t like eggs or sausage so breakfast was out.  At lunch he claimed not to be hungry, but since he didn’t eat breakfast I don’t know how that is possible.  At dinner he said he was hungry but took one look and decided he would rather go to bed.  Oh well, I don’t fix “extra” meals.  You get what you get at our house.  Here’s hoping he doesn’t starve!

Sleep- 11:30-7:30.  Baby girl ended up in my bed, but other than that it was great.  I know I had some dreams, but they are just beyond my reach.

Exercise- CrossFit at 9am.  Warm-up- 800 meter run, 8 inch worms, 50 sit ups and some stretching.  I still can’t lift, but my trainer told me to see how low I could go on a band for my chin ups.  I was able to do 1 chin up unassisted!  No band!  Everyone one has been PRing this week but I missed out since I couldn’t lift.  So at the end of the week I finally got a little moment.  It felt good!  I went for a 2 mile run later in the day- 18:30.

Same as yesterday.

Lunch- Same as breakfast, minus the egg.  Boring I know, but I hated to waste it.

Snack- 6 organic corn tortilla chips with this awesome pimento cheese my mom had!  Yum!!

I call this BBQ Sundae. Cole slaw, BBQ, sauce and dill pickles.

Got to have dinner with this sweet guy who is in town for a visit.

Sorry I have been a little remiss about posting.  This lack of sleep thing has gotten my schedule all out of whack.  Last night I slept from 3am to 7am.  Honestly, not as bad as some nights but certainly not great.  I spent the first half of the night trying to cast out demons in Jesus’ name.  Some of you might think that is a little whacky, but I happen to believe that angels and demons are real and that we are in a time of change on the planet right now and these “other beings” are very active.  I believe it is Biblical.  Anyway, I believe (and have had confirmation from others) that I am highly sensitive to different energies.  I think a lot of what is going on with me has to do with the shifting energies on our planet.  How weird do you guys think I am now? 🙂  I will keep you posted about developments in this area.

As for exercise, it was a rest day from CrossFit, but I did run 3 miles on the treadmill.  29:46

Breakfast- scrambled eggs and 1 nitrite free sausage patty

Lunch- It was Finn’s first day of Homeschool Mother’s Day Out and I did some errands and shopping sans children. Woo Hoo!  Time really got away from me and before I knew it, it was 2:00!  Chipotle is very near her school, so I stopped in there and got my usual salad- lettuce, grilled veggies, pork, pico, salsa and guacamole. Yummy!

Finn waiting at the door to leave for “school”

Dinner- I can’t get enough of this particular Middle Eastern Hot Plate from Well Fed.

Steamy Red Cabbage with onion, garlic, spices

Added in the garlic browned grass-fed beef

Added spaghetti squash and parsley to finish

Sleep-  Fell asleep easily which I am always thankful for.  I did wake up at 3am for some unknown reason and after that I slept til about 6:45 but not very deeply.

Exercise- I took the day off from CrossFit because of my biceps tendon issue and my left hip area issue.  I felt like these “strained” areas needed a little rest from the heavy lifting.  I did go for a run because the weather was so nice.  It was like 70 and breezy which is CRAZY for August in Memphis.  I ran 2 miles and my time was 20:01.  I would really like to decrease that time over the next few months.  I have never been a fast runner.  I have pretty good endurance and I have run up to 15 miles at a time, years ago.  I have no desire to run long distances any more because I feel like it is too hard on my body, but I would like to run 2-3 miles in a shorter amount of time.  Moving on, when Doug got up I did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout with him.

Sweet Potato Hash Browns, 2 scrambled eggs, avocado, organic dark cherries

Lunch- I had the leftover leafy green and salmon cakes from last night.  Still yummy.

Snack- I actually didn’t eat one of these, but I did take a small bite.  They came from Eat Like a Dinosaur. Of course, my daughter loved them and ate 2 of them but my boys didn’t love them.  They ate one, but only because there was nothing else. I thought they were pretty good, but not as good as my almond flour muffins.  The flip side is, since I am avoiding nuts right now, these would be a good alternative since they only have sunflower seed butter.

Nut Butter Cups

Dinner- Sorry about the terrible picture.

Baked Hake, sauteed red cabbage, baked squash and tomatoes

Sleep– Pretty good.  I fell asleep easily, which I am always thankful for and having so many sleepless nights.  I did wake up about 4:30 feeling nauseated or hungry.  I honestly wasn’t sure which one.  I picked up my book and read for a few minutes, then drifted back to sleep.

Exercise- CrossFit at 9am.  Warm up- 500 meter row, lots of stretches and there is something else that I know I am forgetting.  Lift- Deadlift- 1×8+  and 1×20. I used 115# for the first set and did 10, then I went down to 95# for the set of 20.  The WOD today was a 3 mile run in the heat.  Not my favorite since I really don’t consider myself a runner, but I finished and my time was 30:43.  I also did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout with my husband at about 6:00.  He only like to work out if he can work out with me so I am trying to do at least a couple workouts with him a week.

Veggie scramble and 1/2 a banana

Lunch-  Finn and I went to lunch with my friend Clare today at a place called Humdinger’s.  It has fresh, healthy food and I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture!  I had grilled trout with a pineapple salsa which was very good.  I also had grilled zucchini and sweet potatoes fries as a splurge (I didn’t eat all of them).

Snack- Finn and I had to run several errands after lunch and when I got home I was seriously hungry.  Like nauseated kind of hungry!  I had half an organic pink lady apple (my fave) and some almond butter.  I have been staying away from nuts but because I had been doing so well, I thought, what the hey.  I can have a little nut butter.  Wrong!  It totally made my stomach hurt and made me a little bloated.  So obviously still not ready to add many nuts back in yet.

Hot Plate from Well Fed

This was one of the many Hot Plates from Well Fed. While I admit I wasn’t super crazy about the last one, this one was so freakin’ good!  It was grass-fed ground beef cooked with onions and garlic, spaghetti squash, red/purple cabbage, parsley and this spice called Tsardust Memories from Penzey’s spices.  Of course, my daughter loved it.  She is such the good eater.  But this time, even my boys ate it. Yeah!!

Sleep– I was super tired, but I tossed and turned from about 11-1.  My tendonitis in my rotator cuffs just would not ease up.  I finally decided to get up and do some light therapy on it.  I grabbed my book, My Immortal by Erin McCarthy, (a friend of mine has given me several books to read).  I finished the book ( it was good, not a classic, but easy to read and a good escape) and I fell asleep halfway through my second 20 minute light session.  I woke up at 8:30 which may be the lastest I have gotten up since I had my twins 10 years ago.  Seriously!

Exercise- Since I woke up at 8:30, I missed the 9am CrossFit.  I totally missed my crew of girls, but the noon class was good.  Warm up- 1000k row, 2-4-6-4-2 pull ups ( only the blue band today, go me!), 2-4-6-4-2 hand stand push ups ( did the last few against the wall to practice, but most off the box), 30 knees to elbows and an odd stretch with our leg up on some boxes.  Lift- Overhead squat-  I find this very hard on my shoulders.  1×5, 1×5+  I used a 35# bar and did 8 reps on the second set. Backsquat- 1×20 I used 75#.  WOD- 50-40-30-20-10 Double under jump rope and sit ups.  I have not mastered the double under yet so I had to do singles – 100-80-60-40-20.  My time was 8:45.  For some reason, I didn’t feel like I had worked out hard enough so I ran 2 miles when I got home. Time-19:24.

More Leftover sweet potato has browns, chicken sausage and pineapple

Wild Planet 100% Pole & Troll Caught Tuna

I used this tuna to make the Waldorf Tuna Salad from Well Fed. It claims to have less than half the mercury and be sustainably caught.  I got it at Costco and it was definitely more expensive than the Kirkland brand I have bought in the past. If the claims are true then it is worth it.  It was also delicious.

Waldorf Tuna Salad in Avocado Boat and the last of the fresh pineapple

This would have been totally paleo except I used store bought mayo.  I was running late for lunch and just didn’t have the time to make the homemade.  Next time:)

Snack- handful of dark chocolate chips and a spoon of peanut butter.  Let me just admit now that this was a stress reaction.  My mom had just come over to tell me that my grandfather is not expected to make it through the next 24 hours.  I don’t know why this made me want chocolate, but it did.  Peanut butter, too? Even better.  It didn’t turn into an all out binge though so I’m giving myself credit for that.  The situation is crazy stressful because my grandfather married a woman who has cut us out of his life entirely.  Her first order of business was moving him across the country.  The next to write us out of his will.  It has progressed with her sending back pictures of my kids.  I feel like I have learned to forgive her, but knowing that he has been sick and she has kept it from us until it was too late for us to come see him alive has gotten some pretty powerful feelings stirred up in me.  Mostly, my heart breaks for my mom because I know how much it hurts her.  That’s her daddy and that is a pretty big thing in a girl’s life, even if she is all grown.

Wild Hake Loins with Roasted Cauliflower

This was a fish I had never heard of but picked up at Costco for something different.  Reminded me of Mahi Mahi, very meaty.  The kids loved it.  They always love any type of seafood.  I gave the kids the “less burned” cauliflower, but honestly, I kind of like the burned pieces. Shhh! Don’t tell. They think I am being nice:))

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 21

Sleep-12:00-6:15.  We were at the hotel tonight and I slept a little better than the night before.  Maybe the alcohol is helping;)

Exercise- Thursday is supposed to be a rest day, but I literally did not remember what day it was until after I had already worked out.  Traveling does that to me sometimes.  Now, Friday will be a rest day.  Doug and I did a quick 2 mile interval run in the hotel’s gym.  Time-21 minutes, speed 4.0-7.5 mph, incline up to 4%.  Then we came back to the room and did a Bodyrock workout.  12 minutes, 10 seconds rest, 50 seconds work.

1. 10 High knees 5 Deep squats (using 17 pound sandbag)

2. Exploding Push ups ( I did mine on my knees)

3. 2 Around the world w/sandbag and 5 switch lunges w/sandbag

4. Plank Jump Overs

Breakfast- Forgot my phone, so no picture:( It was scrambled eggs, sausage and fruit.  Not terribly exciting, but paleo approved and pretty good.

Whole 30 Day 21 Lunch

I got a little of everything. They had chicken (it wasn’t that good so I only ate a bite), salmon (which was wonderful and I ate every bite), Caesar salad (no croutons), tons of grilled veggies (eggplant, zucchini, onions, peppers squash, tomatoes), olives (I had 2), and a really good caprese salad.  That was my splurge.  I love fresh mozzarella.  Then I had the bowl of fruit you see.  The blackberries have been so good.

Whole 30, Day 21 Dinner

We actually had some “on our own time” tonight so Doug took me to dinner at a restaurant called Ellendale’s.  It was located in a 120 year old home right around the corner from our hotel.  They had a jazz band playing and the atmosphere was casual, but elegant.  I had a local, grass-fed filet, organic green beans and carrots, and some sort of potato/horseradish dish that you see.  The potato dish was not Paleo so I only had a few bites, but the steak was out of this world!  Then as if I hadn’t already had enough cheats today, Doug took me to what is supposed to be the best ice cream place in Nashville- The Pied Piper.

The Pied Piper Creamery

I couldn’t get a good picture with my phone because it was dark out, but this was the flavors board, all homemade.  I had a single scoop but had it split between the Chai Curious (which was my favorite) and the Peanut Butter and Chocolate (my old standby-also good).  Then we walked around and took in a few sights and heard a great band playing.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 20

Sleep- 12;30-6:15- Not great, but better than it has been.  Must have been the vodka and ice cream;)  And I got to wake up to this face:

My nephew Houston having breakfast

Exercise-2.89 interval run/walk- 38:29.  It took a little longer because we ran to the Publix to get breakfast food and the clock was running while we were doing our shopping and checking out.  Our checker was a lovely man named Peter who wanted to ask us all about what we were doing in Nashville and what light therapy is.  So friendly.  Gotta love the south:))  We then did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout.

1.Side to Side on chair

2.2 walking squats with an overhead press (17 pound sandbag)

4.3 squats (low-medium-high) with sandbag on alternating sandbags

Whole 30 Day 20 Breakfast

2 local, organic eggs scrambled in coconut oil, 2 nitrite free pork sausages, 1/2 organic apple, 1/2 avocado

Whole 30 Day 20 Lunch

1 slice turkey, 1 slice ham, lettuce, tomato, salad greens with tomato and cucumber, balsamic vinaigrette, pickle, slaw, fruit

Snack- protein bar

Dinner- We had a meet-n-greet with open bar and appetizers.  The only thing I could have was grilled chicken and raw veggies and blue cheese dip (I splurged on the blue cheese dip).  I also had 2 small glasses of white wine.
