Update

So I really got behind on my blogging while traveling.  Our class schedule was brutal.  The information, however, was life changing.  I love what I do and the people I get to do it with.  Such a blessing.  And then this computer keeps crashing.  Several times I have been mid blog (unsaved of course) and lost my progress and not had the time to make it up.  I have decided to give a brief overview of what I thought about the Whole 30 (even though it is technically unfinished).  I may do it again because my gym is doing one coming up in September, but for now, here is what I learned and what I am thinking about for the immediate future.

I did not find the Whole 30 to be very difficult while at home.  Actually, because I kept my meals so simple, it was really easy.  Going out, however, was a real challenge.  I could make some aspects of it work, but it was really hard to make all aspects come together at any given meal that was not prepared in my home.  I absolutely plan to keep following the plan when I am eating my meals at home (which is about 95% of the time).  We rarely eat out unless we are traveling.  I did not lose any weight.  I wish I had.  It was not my primary motive for doing the challenge, but it would have been a welcome side benefit.  I just got the Well Fed cookbook and the Eat Like a Dinosaur cookbook hoping to appeal to my children.  My plan for now is to start preparing some meals from those books, maybe cooking my way through both of them to broaden our repertoire and find some things that the kids really like.  As I said earlier, I may do the challenge again with members of my gym starting in September, but I will make a decision closer to time.  I also learned through this challenge that I have a really hard time digesting nuts.  I was getting ill every time I had nuts as a snack.  I seem to tolerate a few thrown on a salad ok, but more than that was tearing me up.  I wish this weren’t the case, since I love all sorts of nuts, but it was good to be able to identify the issue and move toward healing it.  Another bonus is that my hair has stopped falling out.  It had been falling out due to my thyroid condition for about 6 months.  It had gotten so thin that I finally cut it off to make it look and feel at least a little thicker.  It took about 2 weeks on the Whole 30, but then the hair loss stopped.  I am hoping that this means that my thyroid is coming back into a better balance.  I don’t retest until September 1st so we’ll see. One of the most important things I am working on is stress.  Normally, the way this ended in such a messy fashion would stress me out to no end.  I have always been in the mind set of if I can’t do it perfect, then I just won’t do it.  I have realized that much of my health issues and my weight issues are tied to my stress level and the stress hormones that I keep my body under WAY too often.  So I am letting go of any stress over the imperfections and I am taking away the aforementioned lessons.  I intend to take the rest of today to grocery shop, clean house, catch up on homeschool, etc and then resume “normal” blogs tomorrow.  FYI- I did go to CrossFit yesterday and today so I am back on track with that.

Just an FYI- last night as I was cooking a gluten-free, dairy-free meal for 12, and  I burned my left hand pretty severely.  My husband had pulled a pot out of the oven that I normally use on the stove top and I grabbed it and moved it!  We’re talking blistered up, skin left on the pot kind of a burn.  Lucky for me, I have light therapy equipment.  I got on it fast and today I was able to wear a glove and do pull ups and snatches at CrossFit.  I also took my daughter to get her ears pierced for her birthday.  Here are a couple of pictures.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 22

Sleep– Little bit better again. 11:15-6:00.  Would love a night where I logged about 9 hours.  I am going to put my intention on that after this conference is over.

Exercise- Active Rest Day (since I forgot yesterday).  Doug and I had the opportunity to take a yoga class with Rama Vernon this morning from 7-8am.  If any of you are involved with yoga, you probably know who she is.  She is incredible.  She is a legend. A force.  She was a pioneer in the field, bringing yoga to the United States.  She was the teacher of B.K.S. Iyengar.  She also started the Yoga Journal in her kitchen as a newsletter.  This was my second opportunity to take yoga with her and she is just such a calming positive force. FYI- she had a life saving experiencing using our LED light therapy system and that is how she came to be involved with the company I work with.  She now speaks at many of our events.

Food- With all the traveling and my computer continuing to crash, I am behind on these postings.  I am going to make these next few brief, so I can get back on schedule.

Beef brisket, slaw, a couple bites of mustard potato salad and salad.  These were the only gluten free options on this Dixie Land Delight Night at the conference.  Not paleo, but not terrible.  The rest of the night was tons of fun.  I rode the mechanical bull (and didn’t fall off). We had a great band and we danced in our boots for 3 hours.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 21

Sleep-12:00-6:15.  We were at the hotel tonight and I slept a little better than the night before.  Maybe the alcohol is helping;)

Exercise- Thursday is supposed to be a rest day, but I literally did not remember what day it was until after I had already worked out.  Traveling does that to me sometimes.  Now, Friday will be a rest day.  Doug and I did a quick 2 mile interval run in the hotel’s gym.  Time-21 minutes, speed 4.0-7.5 mph, incline up to 4%.  Then we came back to the room and did a Bodyrock workout.  12 minutes, 10 seconds rest, 50 seconds work.

1. 10 High knees 5 Deep squats (using 17 pound sandbag)

2. Exploding Push ups ( I did mine on my knees)

3. 2 Around the world w/sandbag and 5 switch lunges w/sandbag

Breakfast- Forgot my phone, so no picture:( It was scrambled eggs, sausage and fruit.  Not terribly exciting, but paleo approved and pretty good.

I got a little of everything. They had chicken (it wasn’t that good so I only ate a bite), salmon (which was wonderful and I ate every bite), Caesar salad (no croutons), tons of grilled veggies (eggplant, zucchini, onions, peppers squash, tomatoes), olives (I had 2), and a really good caprese salad.  That was my splurge.  I love fresh mozzarella.  Then I had the bowl of fruit you see.  The blackberries have been so good.

Ellendale’s

Whole 30, Day 21 Dinner

We actually had some “on our own time” tonight so Doug took me to dinner at a restaurant called Ellendale’s.  It was located in a 120 year old home right around the corner from our hotel.  They had a jazz band playing and the atmosphere was casual, but elegant.  I had a local, grass-fed filet, organic green beans and carrots, and some sort of potato/horseradish dish that you see.  The potato dish was not Paleo so I only had a few bites, but the steak was out of this world!  Then as if I hadn’t already had enough cheats today, Doug took me to what is supposed to be the best ice cream place in Nashville- The Pied Piper.

I couldn’t get a good picture with my phone because it was dark out, but this was the flavors board, all homemade.  I had a single scoop but had it split between the Chai Curious (which was my favorite) and the Peanut Butter and Chocolate (my old standby-also good).  Then we walked around and took in a few sights and heard a great band playing.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 20

Sleep- 12;30-6:15- Not great, but better than it has been.  Must have been the vodka and ice cream;)  And I got to wake up to this face:

Exercise-2.89 interval run/walk- 38:29.  It took a little longer because we ran to the Publix to get breakfast food and the clock was running while we were doing our shopping and checking out.  Our checker was a lovely man named Peter who wanted to ask us all about what we were doing in Nashville and what light therapy is.  So friendly.  Gotta love the south:))  We then did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout.

1 slice turkey, 1 slice ham, lettuce, tomato, salad greens with tomato and cucumber, balsamic vinaigrette, pickle, slaw, fruit

Dinner- We had a meet-n-greet with open bar and appetizers.  The only thing I could have was grilled chicken and raw veggies and blue cheese dip (I splurged on the blue cheese dip).  I also had 2 small glasses of white wine.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 19

Sleep- It was our first night at “Todd and Summer’s” and I usually sleep well when we visit, but not this time.  I was already on a streak of stinky sleeping, so it probably had nothing to do with being there.  I went to bed around 10:45 but didn’t fall asleep until around 3:30  and got up at 6am.

Exercise- Obviously no CrossFit since I am traveling.  Doug and I did an interval run- 2.44 miles, 28:54 time.  Then we did a 12 minute Bodyrock workout and IT WAS KILLER!  CrossFit is certainly it’s own challenge, but I could tell that it had been a month since I had done this exercises!  It didn’t help that we were doing it outside in the heat (we didn’t want to wake my nephew).  It was 4 exercises, 3 rounds, 10 seconds rest, 50 seconds work.  1. Surfer, 2 Squat jumps, 2 jump tucks and a turn 2. 5 Mountain Climber & 5 Star Jumps 3. 2 Push-ups, 1 Burpee, 1 Tuck Jump 4. 2 Forward Lunges, 2 Squats, 2 Upright Row -used 17 pound sand bag

Doug and I ate breakast at Wendell’s.  It is a really old diner that serves a great meat and 3 at lunch and dinner.  Since we were there for breakfast, I had an omelet with bacon, ham, sausage, red and green bell pepper and onions.  I wanted cheese, but I skipped it.  I got 2 sides with the omelet so I chose the sliced tomatoes (approved) and the skillet potatoes with grilled onions (not approved).  My concession was to eat only the 3 crispiest, best looking potatoes with all the onions.  I then gave the rest to Doug.  I just happened to have an avocado in my bag with all my supplements so I added that for some good fat.

Whole 30 Day 19 Lunch

This is a terrible picture, but I will describe what it is.  First off, let me tell you guys that our CEO has gone Paleo so the food options have been awesome.  I work with truly enlightened, progressive company.  Check out the Avalon site on the blogroll.  Anyway, our CEO has lost 20 pounds going paleo over the last 2 months so he committed to making sure paleo food choices were available for all of us!  So cool!  I had some grilled chicken, grilled flank steak, grilled salmon,a salad with bacon and egg, and I had a couple of bites of a quinoa salad.  Not paleo, but I love quinoa and this was really tasty.  Then I had the bowl of fruit that you see and it was really fresh and sweet.

Snack

They provided cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, ranch, blue cheese, hummus and pita chips for a snack.  So awesome!  I had some of the veggies.

Dinner

Mixed greens, chicken salad, pecans, strawberries, blue cheese and vinaigrette.  Super good.  From one of our favorite spots in Nashville, Bread and Company.  We needed something quick before we went downtown for a group outing. Here is where I tell you how I really fell off the Paleo wagon:(  Our company took us out to Robert’s Western World.  Drinks on them, so I had 2 raspberry vodka and soda.  No sweet soda, no gluten, but a splurge for sure.  We listened to the band, did some dancing,  in general just had a good time.  When Doug and I went to leave, we apparently made  a wrong turn onto a 1 way street.  We immediately see blue lights flashing in our rear view.  At first we think, no way could that be for us.  We have only driven about 50 feet at this point.  But, no, they are definitely pulling us over.  We pull over, answer all their questions and my husband is made to do the sobriety test.  He passes with flying colors, but the officers tell him they still believe him to be borderline.  Why am I telling you all this you wonder?  Well, rather than say going to jail, they tell us we just need to go eat some ice cream!  Seriously!!  So, they watch us go down to Mike’s ice cream shop back on Broadway (on foot).  In an effort to stay out of jail, I had to indulge, right?  They make their own ice cream at Mike’s and it was delicious.  I tasted the maple bacon.  Sounds gross, but is surprisingly good.  Then I had some chocolate peanut butter cup and toasted coconut.  I shared them with Doug.  And below is a picture of Doug enjoying his mandated espresso milkshake:))

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 18

I want to start this post with full disclosure- I am out of town all week (til Sunday) on a business trip.  The company I work for is great and they are providing me with gluten free meals:)  However, they will not be totally paleo.  I don’t intend to go completely off the reservation, but I am also not going to stress myself out running here and there and making myself late for meetings because I am trying to find the “perfect” food.   I have decided that I will do the best I can with what is available and report back to let you guys know how I feel.  As always, gluten is a never, but other than that I will try to be flexible within reason.  I may even indulge a little if it is something that will truly feel like an experience- so not a bag of M&M’s on the road, something worth it.  Now that that’s out of the way, here is how today stacked up.  It was a travel day so really my unusual schedule has already started.

Sleep- I thought I was going to go to sleep beautifully.  Fell asleep on my husband’s chest around 10:30. Perfect!  Like a romantic movie:)  But then, I woke up about 5 minutes later and couldn’t get back to sleep.  I was so tired because of last night!  I thought I was going to cry. I hate not being able to sleep.  My sweet hubby talked me down and I got back to sleep somewhere around midnight and slept until about 6:30.

Exercise- No CrossFit this week because of traveling.  I walked for 30 minutes on the treadmill- 3.2mph at 3.0 incline.  Then I did a 12 minute Bodyrock session and it was HARD!  It has been a month since I Bodyrocked and even though CrossFit is it’s own challenge,  there were exercises I hadn’t done in a month and I could tell it!

This was some sort of turkey concoction that my husband made for the kids while I was out grocery shopping for the kids for while we are gone.  My sweet cousin is staying with them for the week and she doesn’t cook!  I was trying my best to come up with healthy meals that wouldn’t require her to do much cooking.  So while I was doing that, he made this.  It was ground turkey, garlic, onions, carrots and steak seasoning.  I put avocado with mine and it was super tasty.  I also had most of an organic apple and 1 tbsp of sunflower seed butter which by the way has become my new favorite thing!

Whole 30 Day 18 Dinner

We ate at a restaurant called Jonathan’s Grille in Nashville.  We started with these sweet potato fries with a sweet chili sauce.  I had maybe 10-12.  They were super yummy:)

Slightly fuzzy picture but this was a buffalo chicken salad.  The chicken was grilled and very light.  It has romaine lettuce, raw celery and carrots, bacon and blue cheese.  There was blue cheese dressing on the side which I used sparingly.  I ate about half of it.

Doug’s Dinner

In the name of full disclosure, I thought I should confess that I had a couple bites of my husband’s dish.  This was a plate of fries with a burger on top of that, with chili on top of that, with queso on top of that, with onion and jalapeno’s on top of that.  He made it healthy by asking them to leave off the Texas toast that was supposed to be the bottom layer!  Ha:) My two bites were delish!

Daily Log- Whole 30 Day 17

Sleep– So I was really tired since I didn’t sleep the last night.  I fell asleep easily at 10:30, but woke up about 20 minutes later:(  I began to panic a little, afraid that it was going to be another sleepless night.  I went and got my husband and he calmed me down and I got to sleep around 11:45.  I think I woke up around 6:30.  Not a total bust, but could have been better.  Here’s hoping for tonight!

Exercise-Rest Day; took a 40 minute walk on the treadmill-3.2 mph at 2.0 incline

Dinner- Wasn’t really hungry. 1 apple with 2 tbsp sunflower seed butter and a few bites of leftover pizza casserole. Then later, I ate the rest of the broccoli and cauliflower my husband made for the kids.  I have a serious love affair with cruciferous vegetables.  I can eat entire bunches!  I shouldn’t, however, because it is not great for my thyroid condition:(

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 16

Sleep- None, nil,  nada, not a wink!  Turned the light out at 10:47 and never slept a bit.  I stayed in the bed til 6 just tossing, turning, praying, killing time.  And to top it off, Finn slept til after 9am!  This has never happened before.  But of course she has to do it on a morning when I am not sleeping:(

Exercise- CrossFit at 9am.  My friend Clare went with me since it was Bring a Friend Day!  It was so great to show her what I do.  She kept up like a real champ although she did think that maybe she was going to expire;)

The warm up was a 400 meter run, 3-6-3 handstand push ups and 3-6-3 pull ups.  The lift today was clean and snatch and snatch balance. Because I am still learning those I just used a 15# bar and practiced my form.  The WOD was an AMRAP for 12 minutes.  5 pull ups, 10 deadlifts (95#) and 250 m row.  I did 5 rounds.

Lunch-leftover turkey/spinach over cauliflower and leftover sweet potato hash browns.  Boring, but I don’t really mind it when I don’t have to cook again.

Snack – 2 tbsp sunflower seed butter on an organic apple

Split the leftovers of the pizza casserole with Doug since the kids were eating next door with my parents.  I actually really enjoy cooking, but it has been so busy lately that I will take any excuse not to cook so I can do something else- read, watch tv, visit with Doug, catch up with friend, etc.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 15

Sleep- Still just so so.  Finn got in my bed at some point, but I am not sure when.  I also got woken up my thunder at some point.

Exercise-CrossFit at 9am.  Warm-up- 500 meter row, 10-15-10 push ups (did the last 10 on my feet since my friend Diane challenged me),  3-6-9-6-3 pull ups (used blue and red bands) and 10 reps of this new exercise where we put our feet, back and shoulders against the wall and then tried to touch our hands.  Sounds easy, but it is really hard when you have limited shoulder mobility.  Our lift today was front squat (2 sets of 8 and 1 set of 8+) I used 65# because my head was hurting.  Then we did the back squat (1 set of 20+)  I used the 65# again and did 25 reps.  The WOD today was 5 knees-to-elbows, 10 box jumps (16 inches) and 15 kettlebell swings (I used a light 20# weight once again because of the headache). 5 rounds- 6:38. Took a 30 minute walk later.

This time I put the leftover turkey/spinach mixture of steamed cauliflower to up the veggie content.  I put organic salsa and green onions on top.

Snack – 1 organic apple and 2 tbsps of sunflower seed butter

Made the paleo pizza casserole again.  Spaghetti squash, ground bison, oregano, basil, S&P, 4 eggs, and nitrite free pepperoni. So yummy:) FYI- this is the whole casserole, not my portion.

Daily Log-Whole 30 Day 14

Yesterday was so busy that I didn’t get around to posting this.  I had my daughter’s birthday party and then my boys had a Nerf party at the Pump It Up!  So between getting ready for parties, attending parties, and cleaning up after parties, there was very little time left.

Sleep- I don’t remember the specifics but I know I woke up a least a couple times in the night.

Exercise-Thursday is my planned day off from CrossFit.  I did, however, break a serious sweat at SkyZone.  My daughter’s birthday party was at this trampoline park and I was the only adult that jumped!  It was super fun and I was pretty beat by the end.  Getting out of the foam pit alone was a good workout:)

Dinner- Very boring- I had the leftover hash browns from lunch and the left over turkey spinach mixture from lunch.  The kids had pizza at both parties and I think my husband had leftover birthday cake so I didn’t bother to cook. Plus I was really tired!

Snack- Not really much of a snack, but I wanted to try the sunflower nut butter that I bought a few days ago so I had a small spoonful out of the jar.  Pretty good.  Nuts have really been bothering my stomach.  Hopefully the seeds will not.  I’ll keep you posted.
